  • BCR Turns Five Today!

Today is the fifth anniversary of the founding of Boston Comics Roundtable! Happy Birthday, BCR!

    Founder Dave Kender writes:

Today the Boston Comics Roundtable celebrates its FIFTH ANNIVERSARY! Nine anthologies, 198 members, a yearly convention, a third (and largest) meeting space, and a fleet of comics created by individual members. I could not be more pleased with how we’ve grown.

From the beginning, this has been group effort. Each new member brings something new and exciting. While we continue to stick to our mission of building a community and supporting local artists, I don’t think we’ll ever lose that.

Thank you to everyone who’s contributed to our success.

Congratulations, BCR! Five years is an exciting milestone!

    Hyun's "Kenshin and Kaoru"

Join us tonight at 7:30pm at the Democracy Center (map) in Harvard Square for our weekly meeting in the Nelson Mandela Room.

Tonight, we’re excited to start an instructional series of brief talks on making comics!  BCR Founder Dave Kender writes:

The BCR’s own Hyun Supul will kick off our presentation series with a demonstration of fight choreography for comics and animation. We’ll have fake swords, but real advice. Join us.

And here is Hyun’s description of what he will be demonstrating tonight:

A presentation about the basics of fight choreography for those who would like to have an introduction to the concept of staged fights (and apply the concepts for comics creation). Will not teach you how to be a Ninja or Zorro in 15 mins, but will cover both unarmed and armed staged combat.

  • Meeting tonight

Join us tonight at 7:30pm at the Democracy Center (map) in Harvard Square for our weekly meeting in the Nelson Mandela Room.

Exciting to see so many new members! Welcome to BCR, and please keep coming!

  • Dan Gessel’s Patrons series!

Tonight, BCR member Dan Gessel will be showing around his evocative Patrons series, an ongoing collection of remarkably sensitive comics portraits of coffeehouse patrons (see upper right). Also shown here is one of his emotion-based character grids, this one depicting “Anxiety and Sadness.”  He drew it as part of a series of character development exercises for his current comics project, Berlin Junction (be sure to check out his beautiful architectural studies at the bottom of the page, too).  For more of his work, please go visit his website at http://www.syntheticblue.com/.  To see his Patrons portraits up close and personal, join us tonight!

We’ll be convening an hour early tonight at 6:30pm at the Democracy Center (map) in Harvard Square for Writer’s Night. More information here!

And at 7:30pm, we’ll have the usual meeting in the usual place: the Nelson Mandela Room, the big room at the Democracy Center.
