  • SPELLBOUND, VOLUME II: Call for submissions

    It’s submission time for Spellbound Vol.2, a continuation of our urban-fantasy comics anthology. The full submission guidelines and details are here.

    This volume of Spellbound has no city limits! Because, lets face it, magic travels well. Modern magic is the theme for volume 2, where tech meets hex, touch screen Ouija boards and the WiFi fairy. Staying within the present/future and it’s amenities, where do you see magic fitting in? While we have a 6 page max, we’re looking for great 3-4 page stories.

    Specifications

    Dimensions: Trim 7” x 8.5”, image safe area 6.5” x 8” — no bleeds.
    Color: Black & White or Grey scale
    Page count: Maximum 6 pages.
    Submission

    Please send us a complete script and at least the fist page in tight pencils (so we have an idea on your style/execution). We will also accept finished pieces, although we will be looking for new work and new writers/artist as well as welcoming our radical favs from previous editions. You are all great, but our page length is brief so send us your best (short and sweet) stuff! If we can’t publish everyone, we will at least give everyone our most sincere feedback and thoughts on your work and how we think it might fit in other publications. Thank you ahead of time for your work, support and incredible creativity!!!

    Important dates

    3/3 – Script deadline. We’ll need a complete script for 1-6 pages, with a 3-4 page sweet spot. In addition at least the first page penciled so we have a feel for your style.

    3/31 – Final art deadline. Expect us to bug for updates before this deadline.

  • BCR Holiday Party Dec. 22

    In lieu of our regular meeting, please come ring in the Holidays, comics-style at at the Boston Comics Workspace at 561 Windsor Street, Somerville, suite A306 (http://bostoncomics.com/workspace). Starts at 7pm, same as the meetings. Bring snacks! Bring comics! Bring whatever one brings to a party!

    The building has a free parking lot right across the street, and it’s only a couple blocks down from the 85 and 69 bus stops at Inman Square.  The Building’s front door is locked, so there will be info posted as to how to get in (ie. texting someone upstairs).  Newcomers welcome!!

    We had a new face at BCR this past Thursday evening, presenting one of the most unusual (and beautiful) projects that has appeared at a meeting.  Aaron Sinift, newly arrived in the Boston area, brought in 2 examples of the books he’s been commissioning and assembling for the past 15 years, and they are unlike any book we’ve ever seen before: screen-printed by crafts-people in India, on cloth bags known as jhola.  They feature artwork by Indian artists and cartoonists, as well as by Western artists (a page by Julie Doucet, and one by Yoko Ono!).

    The limited edition books are sold to institutions and collectors, with profits going to Doctors Without Borders.

    The project brings together artists, scholars, artisans, poets and thinkers to honor sustainable modes of production.  The combined work of all 5 Year Plan participants unites against disposable mass market culture and toward traditional craftsmanship, supporting artisans and artists who have largely been left behind by the global economy.
