Beautiful day on the Common for the BCR Picnic — an actual physical get-together! People brought good stuff, the conversation was erudite and silly, and a lot of drawing took place (we’ll get to that in the next post).

On April 4, BCR will be exhibiting at an unusual venue for a comic convention: a U.S. Air Force Base. The folks at Hanscom Air Force Base reached out to us to take part in their HansCOMICON, a comics, gaming, animation event for military families. The Footlight Club theater in Jamaica Plain is putting on a production of “The Prom,” a musical about a same-sex couple at a high school prom. They’ve asked the Boston Comics Roundtable to organize an exhibit of comic art with LGBTQ creators and themes for the lobby gallery during the run of the show.We are looking for twelve comics creators to display their art:– 3–4 pages from each artist, in sequence is great (but not required).
— LGBTQ theme, however you interpret that. Suitable for a teen audience (but “can be edgy” according to the gallery director).
— Original art, or printouts of digital work.
— Framed and ready to hang – please no sawtooth hangers. Per the gallery director: work that is not ready to hang may be rejected.

The show will hang on April 19th or 26th, with a reception at the gallery early in the run of the play, May 3-17. The show will come down May 18.
If people are interested in learning more about The Prom, I am told that the stage version matches up pretty well to the movie, which is available thru streaming.

The Boston Comics Roundtable table at MICE did gangbuster sales at MICE this past weekend, with the top selling book spot going to the debut Boston Powers spin-off The Indomitable Worm Man from the team of the Minks and Mark Borok. This was the first appearance of this highly enjoyable new comics at a convention, and all 3 creators were at the table. Also making a debut was first-time BCR exhibitor Mary Dumas, whose graphic novels The Lucky Ones and Extreme Retirement also found favor with the buying public, as did Cam Lee’s Leon X Lykos; Julie Di Salvio’s perennially popular kids series Astro Cat, James Mobius’ Punk Rock Space Girl Adventures; Jack Ryder’s Skull Force Agents, Reggie Themistocle’s Stranger on Earth; Deftbeck’s Wonder Calmers, Jesse Schuh’s Year Round Days, Dan Mazur’s Lunatic, and a whole slew of adorable mini comics from Sacha Kenton. Of course, the BCR books themselves, including Boston Powers and Inbound 5 were there as well, and as always the BCR playing cards were the best selling item overall. This is probably BCR’s last show for the year, but lots of the above titles are available at our online store, so gift shopping from BCR is still possible.
